Evil Dead Rise

We went into this film not knowing what to expect. Over the course of a week we refreshed ourselves on all of the old Evil Dead and Army of Darkness movies. With all of them fresh in our minds we had severely high expectations. I can happily say we were not let down.

The story was sort of lacking in terms of context or backstory for any of the characters, but aside from 2013’s Evil Dead none of them have really been fully fleshed out.

There are two main areas I want to focus on. First, the performances. Everyone played their parts admirably. However, there were two standouts for me. Alyssa Sutherland as the matriarch Ellie and newcomer Nell Fisher as the youngest daughter Kassie. At first, you can clearly tell Ellie is a caring mother who wants what’s best for her children, but as soon as she becomes possessed, oh my god. She instantly flips into the most horrifying of all the Deadites in the series of films. Her general look and the way she carries herself are perfection to me. Kassie on the other hand is so freaking adorable. She steals every scene she’s in. She was able to stand toe to toe with Ellie and be so compelling to watch. My honorable mention would be Staffanie.

If you love Evil Dead, you will love this one. There’s gore, heart and a few good laughs.

We give this one 5 Naturom Demonto’s out of 5.
